A team of researchers from the University of Pittsburgh and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) collected emissions samples from several power plant stacks in the United States and developed a unique method for detecting the isotopic signatures of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions under different configurations. These isotopic signatures will be instrumental in helping to identify emission sources of air pollution across the nation.

Sky Harvest Windpower Corp. has formed a joint venture corporation under the name Levant Energy Inc., a British Columbia corporation, for the purposes of developing underground natural gas storage plants in the Republic of Turkey. Sky Harvest will initially hold a 65% interest in the joint venture by investing $500,000 in the newly formed subsidiary. The investment is subject to certain conditions, including Sky Harvest’s completion of further equity or debt funding in order to finance the acquisition. The joint venture intends to use these proceeds to identify and commence securing proposed natural gas storage sites, as well as starting associated permitting processes. It is anticipated that Sky Harvest’s interest in Levant Energy Inc. will be diluted as additional funds are raised.

Envirogen Technologies, Inc. has started up an odour control system for the City of Fort Smith, Arkansas that will remove hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and other odour-causing compounds from air at the city’s P-Street wastewater facility. The new system consists of a single chamber biofilter and will remove more than 99% of average inlet concentrations of H2S and 90% of other organic reduced sulfur compounds. The system is designed to handle up to 12,000 cubic feet per minute (cfm) of air from the facility’s influent pub station, pretreatment system, bioselector and inlet channels. The Fort Smith installation is another example of Envirogen’s ‘green’ biological treatment technology for odour control that is becoming the option of choice across the United States from small to very large requirements. It will be Envirogen’s first biofilter installation in the State of Arkansas.
Shell announced that its Cansolv Technologies Inc. subsidiary (Cansolv) has signed an agreement with Beijing Guodian Longyuan Environmental Engineering Co., Ltd. (GDLY) to license a CANSOLV SO2 Scrubbing System for a new 1.2 GW coal-fired power plant to be built by China Guodian Corporation at Duyun in Guizhou province, P.R.C.

The ST51 Air/Gas Flow Meter supports the US EPA’s BACT (Best Available Control Technology) practices, which require technologies that achieve the maximum degree of emissions control that can be achieved by a particular facility and is based on a case-by-case decision that takes into account technical feasibility, cost and other energy, environmental and economic impacts. FCI designed the ST51 Flow Meter to measure and monitor GHG per the EPA’s requirements. It features a thermal mass, insertion-style flow element with flow accuracy to ±1% of reading over a broad flow range from 0.3 to 400 SFPS (0.08 to 122 MPS), and repeatability of ±0.5 percent of reading. The flow element is available for use in line sizes from 2 to 24 inches (51 to 610 mm). It operates over a wide turndown range of 100:1 and at temperatures from 0 to 250°F (-18 to 121°C). It withstands pressures up to 500 psig [34 bar (g)].
