The growth of hydraulic fracturing operations across North America is undeniable. With a vast amount of natural gas captured in giant shale plays beneath the U.S. and Canada, fracturing has become a byword in the industry.

Dakota Technologies offers the UVOST, a direct-push delivered sensor that allows rapid screening of most petroleum-based light non-aqueous phase liquids (LNAPLs). This tool uses laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) technology to immediately detect sub-surface contamination without having to draw samples or wait for lab results.
The UVOST responds exclusively to source term NAPL, free of interference from dissolved phase hydrocarbons, and it is ideal for detecting fuels, lubricants, and crude oils. The system is designed for use with all direct-push platforms such as Geoprobe, AMS PowerProbe, and cone penetrometers.
When deployed, the UVOST’s probe uses ultra-violet laser light and a sapphire-windowed sensor to detect the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that are found in petroleum LNAPL. As the probe is driven into the ground, the LNAPL’s fluorescence signal is sent through a fiber-optic cable to a detector and logged by a laptop computer, so results can be seen in real time, and on-site personnel can begin determining an ideal location for the next probing location. In a typical day 250 to 500 feet of continuous logging can be performed.
For each hole the UVOST generates a detailed, colorized log that shows the presence of PAH LNAPL versus depth. The high-resolution electronic logs can be easily incorporated into three-dimensional conceptual site models, which are used to help estimate costs and create a plan for removal of the contaminants.

Within a few days of the incident on the Deepwater Horizon, Thompson Pump Company mobilized their Emergency Response Team (ERT) to provide pumping equipment, supplies, manpower and a wealth of tactical knowledge to areas devastated by the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
Once the extent and location of the potential damages were ascertained, Thompson Pump began supplying pumps and equipment throughout areas of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida currently or imminently impacted by the oil spill. Thompson’s ERT is currently skimming in both deep and shallow waters throughout the Gulf as well as in rivers and streams in the bayous and marshes in order to help minimize the devastation. Thompson Pump is slated to have as many as one hundred pumps, along with hoses and specialized skimming devices, to facilitate oil containment, recovery and transfer.
Thompson Pump branch locations in Hammond, La., Jackson, Miss., Pass Christian, Miss., Pensacola, Fla., and Panama City, Fla. are all directly involved with this project. These locations, along with the aid of the Thompson Pump nationwide network of branches, are providing equipment, service and support to aid in the environmental restoration efforts.
“Although this challenge is significant and extensive, Thompson Pump has the experience and equipment necessary to assist in the long-term restoration of our waters and our shoreline,” says Bill Thompson, President of Thompson Pump. “We are allocating enormous resources to attack this problem with the intention of enabling the citizens in the affected areas to resume their normal lives as quickly as possible.”
Thompson Pump is working closely with contractors who are tasked with various areas of clean-up responsibilities.
