International perspectives on indigenous energy relations and more at GPS

Global Petroleum Show (GPS), the flagship energy gathering that calls Calgary home, will celebrate its 49th year this June as it seeks to engage and educate industry experts from around the world with regards to innovation and technology, energy sector issues and international business relations. In addition to more than 1,000 exhibiting companies, headlining this year's show will be the Low Carbon Innovation Forum, the Indigenous Conference on Energy and Mining, the Energy Dialogues, and the Country Markets Seminar Series.

Energy producers are in a constant state of evolution, and investing in new technologies and thought processes to produce more energy, lower costs and better protect the environment are key areas of focus for every company. For nearly fifty years, GPS has been the meeting place for industry leaders to share technologies, network and do business. GPS 2017 invites local and international delegates and industry leaders to lend their perspectives to the solution-building discussions that will form a major part of this year's show. In addition, GPS offers networking, dozens for free educational seminars and interactive offerings on the show floor.

As the world moves towards a low carbon economy and the global social licence to produce hydrocarbons becomes more complex with each passing day, the petroleum industry faces one of its greatest challenges. Finding a meaningful solution to carbon management at GPS was first addressed with the introduction of the first Low Carbon Innovation Forum held in 2016. The forum examines ways to accelerate technological innovation, reduce risk and increase the successful commercialization of new technologies. Experts will focus on new business models that can help ensure success in a marketplace where investors are risk adverse, and will even probe into the unimaginable – what the oil and gas sector may look like when hydrocarbons are no longer used as fuels.

"Low carbon innovation, insight into Indigenous perspectives, global exploration opportunities and strategies – these are just some of the key topics we look forward to addressing at this year's show," said Bruce Carew, Vice President Energy for dmg :: events, organizers of the Global Petroleum Show. "GPS was established as a platform for international collaboration and innovation and we believe these topics are of paramount importance to the future of energy. We invite guests and participants to come to the show with open minds and contribute to the innovative future that lies ahead for energy development across the globe."

The increasing importance of the Indigenous voice in the global resource community is a matter that continues to move to the forefront of forward-thinking discussions at GPS. Now in its second year, the Indigenous Conference on Energy and Mining has become an excellent platform for international communities to join in collaborating on issues pertaining to the energy sector and Indigenous peoples. The theme of this year's conference is Empowering Connections and will focus on understanding and sharing issues important to the Indigenous community, considering various viewpoints on all forms of energy development from around the world.

"Many foreign governments actually look to Canada to see how it is working with its Indigenous people," Cheryl Cardinal, President and CEO of the Indigenous Centre of Energy, and Conference Chairperson. "It's very timely to have the conference at GPS where international delegations can work together to be more inclusive of Indigenous communities in energy sectors around the world. We are developing solutions that will be to everyone's benefit, looking at where we can go from here and how governments can meaningfully engage their Indigenous peoples in resource and energy development."

Leading in international business

In addition to Canada's leadership in Indigenous relations, it also continues to be regarded as a leader in international business throughout global energy markets. The Country Market Seminar Series at GPS, sponsored in part by the Canadian Global Exploration Forum (CGEF), is the place where operators and service companies alike come to gain valuable insights from government representatives and national oil companies from across the globe. This year, more than 20 countries will share opportunities for international business and the process of conducting business transactions in their respective countries. CGEF is also a conduit for sharing Canada's wealth of knowledge about business practices, technology, corporate social responsibility and other pertinent issues, such as environmental stewardship, and will host one-to-one meetings with the visiting delegations at GPS.

Global Petroleum Show is also pleased to present a new speaker series featuring an array of brilliant thought leaders who have come together to share their ideas, opinions and expertise on a variety of topics facing tomorrow's energy sectors. The topics are as diverse as the invited speakers, and intended to be thought-provoking and perhaps even controversial; but one thing is for certain, the audience will be completely immersed in The Energy Dialogues taking place at this year's show. The purpose of The Energy Dialogues is to answer two questions: What is a global sustainable energy future strategy? And more importantly; How do we plan and implement a global sustainable energy strategy? Every person in the world seeks and deserves affordable energy; but with today's current technologies and resources, the financial and environmental costs of implementation are impractical, leaving it impossible to achieve affordable energy for all. There is no single resolution that reaches a sustainable energy solution, so The Energy Dialogues at GPS seek to bridge science, government regulation, financial investment and shifting public opinion.
