Composite replacing metallic centrifugal pump wear parts in refineries

WR®650 delivers high chemical compatibility, excellent wear characteristics, and operability from subzero to 500°F (260°C).
WR®650 delivers high chemical compatibility, excellent wear characteristics, and operability from subzero to 500°F (260°C).

Greene Tweed highlights WR650, a next-generation PFA composite with superior dry run characteristics designed to replace metallic wear parts in centrifugal pumps and other pump applications.

Metallic wear parts fail quickly in dry run conditions, giving pump operators limited time to restore lubrication or shut down a pump before costly damage occurs. High quality composite parts increase this effective response time and can extend the mean time between repair. Reinforced with a 3D carbon-fiber architecture, WR650 can sustain 2.5-times higher dry wear conditions before showing signs of degradation when compared to the leading PFA-based material.

WR650 delivers high chemical compatibility, excellent wear characteristics, and operability from subzero to 500°F (260°C). The advanced material also possesses a coefficient of thermal expansion comparable to steel over a wide range of temperatures, offering a constant running clearance, no interference, and no efficiency drop. Unlike metallic wear components, the malleable nature of PFA ensures metallic counter-parts are preserved, even those that are relatively soft. This helps to extend pump service life and improve reliability. Plus, WR650's non-galling/non-seizing characteristics and ability to dampen vibrations allow for tighter clearances and increased efficiency compared to traditional metallic components.

Ideal for stationary wear parts in vertical, horizontal, single, and multistage centrifugal pumps, WR650 can improve the mean time between repair for pumps in refineries, chemical plants, power plants, pipelines, and water treatment plants. WR650 is available in a broad range of stock shapes, ranging from ID1" to OD12" and finished parts are available upon request.

In addition to WR650, Greene Tweed offers the broadest range in the industry or high-performance materials for wear ring bearings and bushings, including compression molded PEEK WR300 and WR525 for normal wear applications, and AR1 and ARHT for abrasion-resistant applications.

Taking a closer look at torque tooling requirements

Whether connecting a blowout preventer on a drilling rig or installing a bundle for a heat exchanger in a refinery turnaround, one of the last, and most critical, steps in completing the work is to torque the fasteners on the flanged connections. The likely tool available is a hydraulic torque wrench, but as most industry technicians know, these tools are slow and can present safety and environmental challenges.

Orbital Gas Systems secures GasPTi orders from leading U.S. energy producer and transporter

Orbital Gas Systems has received orders to supply GasPTi systems for deployment across multiple natural gas plants by one of the largest U.S.-based producers and transporters of energy. These orders, part of a nascent, ongoing roll-out of GasPTi across the customer's extensive natural gas assets, will be utilized to deliver operating and environmental improvements and practically eliminate ongoing costs associated with maintenance and natural gas consumption at certain customer facilities.

Efficient pump protection for large pumps: The control valve alternative

In the power production or oil and gas industries, centrifugal pumps for fire protection or condensate systems and other large pumps are critical to operations. However, when unprotected, these units are at greater risk. Operation of these pumps below the minimum flow condition, specified by the manufacturer, can cause overheating—wreaking catastrophic damage to a pumping station. A twin threat, cavitation, can also occur because of operation below the minimum flow condition. These consequences are likely to reduce plant productivity and profitability. The standard pump protection solution, a control valve, offers only complicated functionality and limited economy for installation. For many large pump applications, an all-in-one automatic pump protection valve proves more effective and efficient when compared to a control valve alternative.

Overcoming entrained gas challenges in crude oil transfer

Like snowflakes and human fingerprints, no two oil wells are exactly the same. Even though they may be located on adjacent plots of land, the characteristics of the wells can be vastly different. Whereas one might have a straight, unencumbered path to the product reservoir, the second's drilling route may require a number of dogleg turns to avoid difficult rock and sediment formations, which can give the final wellbore the look of a corkscrew.
