Guarding against crude oil railcar risks

One common acronym in the railroad industry that shippers hate to hear is NAR, short for Non-Accident Release. According to the Association of American Railroads (AAR), a NAR is “the unintentional release of a hazardous material while in transportation, including loading and unloading, but not involving an accident.” That means that NARs can consist of leaks, splashes and other product releases from railway tank cars that have improperly secured or defective valves, fittings, tank shells and other pieces of related equipment, while also including the venting of non-atmospheric gases from safety relief devices.
