Steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) is a technology that enhances total oil recovery from drilling during the extraction of heavy crude oil and bitumen. This technique involves drilling two horizontal bores in a vertical arrangement into an area with known oil deposits, with a separation of a few metres. High pressure steam is forced continually into the upper wellbore which increases the temperature of the small deposits in the vicinity of the upper wellbore. The heated oil has a lower viscosity, and as such will begin to drain under gravity into the lower wellbore where it can be pumped to the surface.
